MILFORD LIONS CLUB

District 22-D

Telephone Book

Updated September 18, 2007

The first Milford Lions Club telephone book was printed in 1948.  That year 3,200 copies were printed, costing just over $1000.  Today we print 17,000 copies and the cost is just under $42,000.  We deliver 13,000 books in Milford, and the surrounding communities of Lincoln, Houston, Ellendale.  The remaining 4,000 books are delivered in Harrington and Frederica by the Lion Clubs in those towns.  We sell yellow page ads to help cover the cost of printing the phone book.  The 1948 phone book had about 120 ads, today we have over 550 ads.  Over the years, we have made many changes to improved the telephone book.  Today, one person contacts businesses for yellow page ads. We purchase the phone listing from Verizon.  We contract Kent Sussex Industries, a handicap vocation work center, to put the books in plastic bags for delivery. We have added a postage paid donation envelope to the inside cover.  These improvements have added extra cost, but we believe we now have a better phone book.  The front cover is selected from drawings submitted by the Milford High School art students.  Each year we select a first, second and third place drawing.  The first place is awarded $100 and the drawing is placed on the front cover.  The second place receives $75, third place receives $50, their drawings are place in the front of the book.
